Autodesk Fusion

Professional parametric CAD with a free personal-use licence, renewable every three years, limited to non-commercial projects generating under 1,000 USD a year.

Closed sourceSubscriptionWindowsmacOS

Fusion is the parametric CAD most used by makers who have outgrown Tinkercad. It models with constrained sketches and history-based operations, so changing a dimension rebuilds the whole part. Autodesk offers a free personal-use licence for people generating under 1,000 USD a year from home-based, non-commercial projects; that licence runs for three years and is renewed on expiry. If you do client work, consulting or any commercial activity, Autodesk requires a paid subscription. That is a point worth reading carefully in Mexico before building a printing business on a personal licence.

Best for

  • Parametric, history-based design: change one dimension and everything rebuilds
  • Assemblies and parts that have to fit together
  • Anyone who has outgrown Tinkercad
  • Exporting STEP to preserve exact geometry

Limitations

  • The personal licence excludes commercial use: if you sell prints, you need a subscription
  • A steep learning curve compared with Tinkercad
  • Files live in Autodesk's cloud by design
  • There is no official Linux build
