Mesh repair
Autodesk Meshmixer
Autodesk's free tool for repairing and manipulating meshes. Still downloadable, but Autodesk states it is no longer in development and will not be supported.
Meshmixer is the Swiss army knife of triangle meshes: it patches holes, converts to solid, hollows with escape holes, generates branching supports, auto-orients on the bed, simplifies and remeshes, does plane cuts, booleans and thickness and stability analysis. It is free and runs on Windows and macOS. Its status has to be said plainly: Autodesk announced it has no plans to retire it, but that the tool is no longer in development and will not be supported, and recommends moving to Fusion, which has absorbed much of its mesh functionality. People still use it because nothing is more direct for fixing a downloaded STL in two minutes.
Best for
- Auto-repairing a downloaded STL the slicer refuses
- Hollowing a resin part and adding drain holes
- Cutting a large model into printable pieces
- Checking thickness and stability before printing
Limitations
- Autodesk states it is no longer in development and will not be supported
- There is no Linux build
- Not parametric: it works on the mesh, not on the design
- It uses a custom installer rather than the standard app store one
