Free AGPL-3.0 server for controlling and watching your printer from a browser. Usually installed on a Raspberry Pi wired over USB.
OctoPrint is the veteran remote-control server of the filament world. It is published under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 and normally runs on a Raspberry Pi wired over USB to the printer, though it also runs on desktop Windows, macOS and Linux. From a browser you can upload G-code, start and stop prints, jog axes, watch the camera, follow temperatures and receive alerts. Its plugin ecosystem is enormous, covering everything from failure detection to smart-plug control. In Mexico it has an under-discussed extra benefit: it lets you leave the printer in a ventilated room and watch it from another, which is exactly what you should do when printing ABS or ASA.
Best for
- Watching long prints without being in the same room
- Printing ABS or ASA in a ventilated space and controlling it from outside
- Camera, time-lapse and print-finished alerts
- Extending functionality with community plugins
Limitations
- It needs extra hardware (a Raspberry Pi or another dedicated computer)
- Installation involves some command line
- It does not replace being there: it will not put out a fire
- Exposing it directly to the internet unprotected is a real security risk
