FDM, also called FFF, is the 3D printing technology that builds a part by depositing molten filament layer by layer through a moving nozzle.
Full definition
It is the technology behind 90 % of home printers and the cheapest to run. The machine heats filament above its softening point and extrudes it onto the previous layer, where it welds by partial fusion. From that come its two defining traits: visible layer lines and anisotropy, meaning the part is weaker vertically, between layers, than within a single layer. FDM is a Stratasys trademark; FFF is the free equivalent term.
