Raft

Also known as: raft · balsa · base de impresion · cama de sacrificio

Short definition

A raft is a multi-layer platform printed first, on top of which the part is built, instead of printing directly onto the bed.

Full definition

It is used when the bed is not perfectly level, when the part's contact area is minimal, or when the material lifts easily. The raft isolates the part from bed irregularities and spreads heat more evenly, at the cost of wasting material, lengthening the print and leaving a textured underside. In resin printing the equivalent concept is the raft that holds supports above the platform. Today, with auto-levelling beds and PEI sheets, rafts are used far less than ten years ago: in most cases a brim is enough.
