Perimeters (walls)

Also known as: perimetros · perímetros · paredes · walls · wall count · shells · contornos

Short definition

Perimeters are the outline passes the extruder traces at the edge of each layer; their number defines the real wall thickness of the part.

Full definition

Each perimeter adds one extrusion width to the wall thickness. With a 0.4 mm nozzle and a typical 0.45 mm extrusion width, three perimeters give a wall about 1.35 mm thick. It is the setting with the best ratio of strength gained to time spent: on parts working in bending, going from two to four perimeters helps more than doubling infill. It also determines whether a threaded hole holds or strips, and whether vertical surfaces are opaque or let the infill show through.
