Bridging

Also known as: puenteo · bridging · puentes · bridge · cruzar al aire

Short definition

Bridging is the printer's ability to lay material across a gap between two supports, with nothing underneath, and have it come out straight.

Full definition

When the slicer detects a gap between two supported points, it prints straight lines from one side to the other at a speed and cooling different from the rest of the layer, so the strand stretches and solidifies before it sags. The limit depends on material and cooling: PLA bridges very well, PETG is notoriously worse and ABS needs help. A sagging bridge is usually fixed by raising cooling, lowering bridging speed, or redesigning the hole as a teardrop rather than a circle.
