Overhang

Short definition
An overhang is the part of a model that juts out with nothing beneath to support it, measured as the angle from vertical.
Full definition
The 45-degree rule of thumb says that up to that angle each layer rests enough on the one below; beyond it, material hangs too far in the air and droops. It is not an exact physical law: it depends on cooling, layer height, speed and material. PLA with a good fan can go past 55 degrees without supports, while ABS without cooling fails before 45. The cheapest fix is almost never adding supports but rotating the part: changing orientation often removes the problem overhangs entirely.
