Resin: the part does not stick to the build plate

Symptom

At the end of the print the plate comes out empty, or with only part of the raft, and the part is found stuck to the bottom of the vat as a sheet of cured resin. Prusa documents it as prints breaking away from the platform.

Likely causes

In order: the most frequent cause comes first.

  1. 01Insufficient bottom-layer exposure: not enough resin cures against the plate
  2. 02A badly levelled plate or loose screws
  3. 03A smooth, dirty plate surface, or one with cured resin residue
  4. 04Very small contact area: the part rests on few raft points
  5. 05Excessive peel force from lifting too fast

How to fix it

Apply one fix at a time and reprint the same test part. Changing three settings at once tells you nothing about which one worked.

    Increase bottom-layer exposure time

    Easy

    Manufacturers publish concrete ranges: Anycubic specifies 20 to 40 seconds of bottom exposure for its Standard Resin V2, 23 to 40 for ABS-Like 3.0 and 25 to 40 for Water-Wash 2.0. If you are at the low end, move to the high end. It is the first correction to try.

    Re-level the plate using paper

    Medium

    Loosen the plate screws, place a sheet of paper over the screen, home the plate to zero so it settles flat under its own weight, and tighten the screws crosswise. Pull the paper out: it should come with some resistance. An unlevel plate leaves the part hanging from one corner.

    Lightly sand the plate and clean it

    Medium

    An over-smooth plate does not grip. Sand crosswise with 400 or 600 grit, clean with isopropyl alcohol and dry it. Also remove any cured resin sheet left at the bottom of the vat before printing again, or the next attempt will fail the same way.

    Add a raft and more contact supports

    Easy

    In the resin slicer, enable the raft and increase support density at the base. Tilting the part by 20 to 30 degrees also helps: it reduces the area that peels away at once on each layer and with it the suction force.

How to prevent it

  • Re-level the plate every time you remove it to wash a part
  • Filter the resin in the vat after every failure, before retrying
  • Always use a raft on parts with a small footprint
  • Record the exposure that works for each resin and each brand
